HOW ADAM AND EVE COULD HAVE AVOIDED GOD’S JUDGMENT

By Elijah Asuo Wiredu

A lot of people have not thought about whether or not Adam and Even could have avoided the judgment that God splashed on them in the Biblical story of the fall of man. The popular story as recorded in Genesis chapter 3 begins with Satan in the form of a serpent deceiving Eve to eat from the Tree of knowledge of good and evil. God’s command to man is recorded in Genesis 2:16,17 “And the Lord God commanded the man ‘you are free to eat from any tree in the Garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die”. Though they had this in mind, they still fell to the devil’s deception.

Their immediate experiences after eating the fruit made them see the change that had happened to them. The first thing they did was to sow fig leaves together to cover their nakedness (Gen 3:7). That is, they actually did not deal with their mess. They were rather concerned with the consequences of their actions. They hid from the presence of the Lord not because they were remorseful but because they were naked (Gen 3:10)

The hearing and the judgment

When God questioned Adam, he played the ‘good boy’ and made God the one who made the mistake. In Genesis 3:11 God asked them man, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” Adam in response did not even answer God’s question. He did not accept his mistake and never took responsibility for his own actions. Verse 12 says that “The man said “the woman You put here with me- she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it”. Eve also followed her husband’s path when she said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate it”. Obviously, the serpent had no one to push the blame upon.

Do you think that things would have been the same if Adam had accepted his mistake and asked for forgiveness? God would definitely have found a way to cleanse the garden and deal with his weakness. Even Cain after he had killed his Abel and disrespectfully spoken to God begged God to reduce his punishment because it was more than he could bear (Gen 4:13). God understood and reviewed his punishment in Gen 4:15. If they had known that God is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness (Exodus 34:6, Numbers 14:18) they might have corrected their errors.

Lessons to learn

Many people think that they have so messed up that they can never make things right with God. Paul the apostle stood to witness and even contributed to the murder of Stephen (Acts 7:58). He even persecuted the church at which time the Lord Jesus revealed himself to him. Let us never think that we have not got any chance to be forgiven. Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. Isaiah 1:18 (NIV)

A lot of relationships have died because people were not ready to accept their responsibilities and apologize to the people they offended. Sometimes, all that is required to save a situation is for one person to ask for forgiveness. Some people, especially men see it as a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it is a sign of great strength and an evidence of great emotional intelligence. Let it not be too heavy to say “sorry” to your spouse, children, friends, bosses and subordinates in the work place.
