TRINITY SERIES – JESUS IN THE BEGINNING
By Elijah Asuo Wiredu
We begin our discussion of the Trinity with identifying Jesus in the story of the beginning. The opening sentence of the Bible mentions God as creator.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1
So people have no problem believing that God was in the beginning. The Holy Spirit was also mentioned as hovering over the waters during the creation story.
… and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
Genesis 1:2
The problem is the name “Jesus” is not mentioned in the creation story and in the Old Testament. So to discuss the trinity, we need to identify Jesus at the point of creation.
Of course, a number of Bible verses affirm that Jesus was in the beginning and he was part of creation
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
John 1:3
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
John 1:10
… in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
Hebrews 1:2
For by Him all things were created, both in the in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones-all things have been created by Him and for Him.
Colossians 1:15
But how do we see Jesus in the story of the beginning? We have already said that Jesus is not mentioned in the creation. However, there were three personalities involved in the creation- God, the Holy Spirit and a third person. In John 1, the third person was identified as “word”. So in the creation, the personalities were God, the Holy Spirit and the Word. The word is easier to understand as the voice of God. So that we understand that if god created things by speaking, then his voice (the word) was mused in creation.
John concludes everything in John 1:14
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14
So Jesus is when the word/ voice of God becomes flesh by taking a human form. And Jesus really did that and dwelled among us. We saw his glory and we identified him as the son of God. So the fact that the name of Jesus is not mentioned in Genesis does not mean he was not part of creation.
