BLACKS IN THE HOLY BIBLE

By Elijah Asuo Wiredu

During the days of Martin Luther King, when he prophesied that one day Blacks will speak in tongues, he was greeted with massive disapproval because of the vibrancy of the slave trade at that time. In the world of racism, one may wonder if the bible had people who were Blacks. In this article, I will discuss the case of Blacks in the Bible.

The first mention of Blacks in the Bible is in Genesis 10:6-12. Ham was the second son of Noah and Hams first son was called Cush. Cush is one of the terms used in the Bible to refer to black people. The meaning of Cush is Ethiopia or Blackness. That is why Cush is the first evidence of Black people in the Bible.  So, whenever you see words such as Cush, Ethiopia, and Cyrene in the Bible, they refer to Blacks. Cush and all his sons named in Genesis 10:7 are all blacks.

Among the sons of Ham Cush is described in the Bible as a mighty warrior on earth. In fact, Nimrod is the founder of the great Babylonian empire. Aside from Babylon, he built popular cities such as Nineveh and Rehoboth. This is one of the reasons people believe that civilization began with blacks. Sheba is also a grandson of Cush. So the queen of Sheba who visited King Solomon in 1 Kings 10:1-13 was a black woman descending from Noah through Cush.

The sons of Ham:

Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan.

The sons of Cush:

Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteka.

The sons of Raamah:

Sheba and Dedan.

Cush was the father[c] of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in[d] Shinar.[e] 11 From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir,[f] Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city.

Secondly, the Bible mentions in Genesis 25 that after the death of Sarah, Abraham Married another woman named Keturah.

Abraham had taken another wife; whose name was Keturah. She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah. Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan; the descendants of Dedan were the Ashurites, the Letushites and the Leummites. The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanok, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.

Genesis 25: 1-4

With Keturah, Abraham had six (6) sons. One of the sons of Keturah and Abraham was Midian. Many years later, when Median had become a city, Moses married a daughter of the King and priest of Midian by name of Zipporah. That means Moses’ wife and children were blacks

Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite.
