WHERE DO WE GO WHEN WE DIE?

By Elijah Asuo Wiredu

In our last article, we discussed the difference between Heaven and Paradise. This topic is meant to establish our discussion on that topic.

We don’t go to Heaven after death. During the rapture, those who died as believers will be meet Christ first in the sky and they will be joined by the living Christians.

and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

So, the dead in Christ will come from where they been kept in peace to meet the lord in the clouds. We learnt from our previous discussion that in the Old Testament, there was no Paradise. Paradise started existing after the death of Christ.

The realm of the dead below is all astir
    to meet you at your coming;
it rouses the spirits of the departed to greet you—
    all those who were leaders in the world;
it makes them rise from their thrones—
    all those who were kings over the nations.
10 They will all respond,
    they will say to you,
“You also have become weak, as we are;
    you have become like us.”
11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,
    along with the noise of your harps;
maggots are spread out beneath you …

15 But you are brought down to the realm of the dead,
    to the depths of the pit.

Isaiah 14:9

So in the Old Testament, there was the realm of the dead. Verse 9 mentions the realm of the dead below to signify that there was also the realm of the dead above. I believe it was one place where all the dead went to. But those who died in the Lord were kept above (the place Jesus called Abraham’s Bossom) while the others were kept below (Hades) and there was only a chasm/great pit between them like Abraham said to the rich man (Luke 16:19-31).

In the New Testament, the death of Jesus Christ created Paradise for those who died in the Lord. That is the place reserved for all those who die while they have accepted Jesus into their lives. Paradise is a waiting place for such people. They are kept there while they wait for judgment in the last day.

I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows. And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell.

2 Corinthian 12:2-4

Paradise is a place specially made for us while we wait for the end time. You can imagine how God will make such a place blissful. In fact, wherever, God kept the tree of life which he took form the Garden of Eden, he brought it to paradise.

7 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

Revelation 2:7

Adam and Eve were not permitted to eat from that tree but when we die, we are permitted to eat from it. Praise the Lord.
